The time I spent in Kenya in 2002 and 2003 as the volunteer medical director (PA) of a remotely located clinic coincided with the peak of the African AIDS epidemic. AIDS was only one among many hideous diseases- malaria was actually more common- that maimed and killed so many, and never a week went by (sometimes never a day) where there was misery and suffering incomprehensible to most Americans. One horrific belief among some men with AIDS was that they could be cured by having sex with a young female, and the girl really didn\u2019t have any say in the matter. One day, the tragedy of the day was a girl of perhaps 18 who, in one clinic visit, was diagnosed with AIDS, tuberculosis, syphilis, and <\/em>noted to have peau d'orange on the skin on her breasts, suggestive of an atypical form of breast cancer. Keep this in mind when considering the things that cause us so much angst in our very privileged American lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The wealth and privilege we universally experience in the US doesn\u2019t seem to enrich us in a way that matters- to inspire us to elevate the less fortunate- rather it makes us greedy for more materialism, more convenience, and more comfort. As in the old CCR song, Fortunate Son, \u201c...the only answer is more, more, more.\u201d Within this framework however- entire generations knowing nothing other than wealth and privilege- discontentedness in life certainly seems<\/em> real (perhaps even rampant because<\/em> of our crass affluence) despite being utterly trivial on a global and historic basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With this in mind, picture what it must be like to be a girl or young woman in America today. Constant demands to be sexy, to be seductive, to be hot and desirable. Constant yearning for attention, to have endless social media \u201clikes\u201d and \u201cfollowers,\u201d to receive approval and validation from people known as well as total strangers. If a susceptible girl, insulated by wealth and privilege and lacking any deeper meaning or purpose, fails to receive attention, her options are limited: act even sexier, \u201ctwerk,\u201d or perhaps to declare herself a lesbian, \u201cnon-binary,\u201d or \u201ctransgender:\u201d Consider the following headlines, just a few taken from the UK tabloid The Daily Mail in one single edition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taylor Swift rocked a dazzling pink rhinestone leotard before changing into a sizzling black bodysuit<\/strong> on Friday night when she kicked off her record-breaking Eras tour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Chantel Jeffries shows off her jaw-dropping figure in a red thong bikini <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyonce ditches her bra for nipple pasties as she slips her curves into VERY sheer gold dress for sexy snaps <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Vicky Pattison flaunts her incredible figure in a skimpy black bikini<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lottie Moss goes topless and wears nothing but a thong as she showcases her sensational figure<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lauren Goodger stuns in a busty plunging swimsuit<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Admittedly, I don\u2019t know who most of these girls\/women are, but I do know they are celebrities who value attention, glamour, money, and validation beyond any reasonable amount. I fear these are the heroes of girls and young women in America today, their role models, and NOBODY can live up to the artificial standards they ooze. Remove the make-up, high-fashion, and photo-shopping, and even the celebrities themselves can\u2019t meet their own standard. The cultural powers promoting all this pernicious nonsense are not conservative Christian churches, to say the least, but the usual suspects: progressive media, cultural bon vivants, and corporations that prey on anyone vulnerable to give them a little more profit and gain a little more power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How awful the abject void so many girls and young women must feel, especially if they are not attractive and sexy and hot, by failing to meet these completely unrealistic and meaningless standards. But no worry, there are always predators with easy answers of how the young females can feel good about themselves: progressive politicians, pretend experts in the media and medical establishment, and psuedo-educators concerned not with teaching but with indoctrination who say, \u201cYou are defective,\u201d \u201cWho you are isn\u2019t right,\u201d and \u201cYou are inherently flawed. You only need to turn your life over to us, allow us to amputate your breasts and saturate you with chemicals, and we will make you happy.\u201d These are extraordinarily selfish, and greedy people who seek control, power, money, and their own affirmation by exploiting young women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Up until this point and the fad and atrocity of \u201ctransgenderism,\u201d compassionate people and a caring society at large would say, when counseling child or adolescent with perfectly normal insecurities, \u201cYou are fine the way you are. All this stuff- the looks, the glamour, popularity- is just superficial nonsense and as you grow up you\u2019ll discover it means nothing. There will always be people who try to make you feel you are a failure, that something is wrong with you, and these are either bullies who do what they do because they themselves are weak and cowardly or, even worse, people who pretend they care about you but only want to control your life and take things from you for their own selfish reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n What a grotesque power to hold as a politician, teacher, social worker, medical practitioner, or anyone in a position of legal or cultural authority: to fracture families and children, to coerce parents into giving up their children for sacrifice to appease the self-serving elite- bullies and thugs by any other name. And disgraceful shame to parents who are willing to comply. It\u2019s funny in the sickest of ways: one of the most vile practices of slavery was splitting apart families, and one of the most depraved actions of tyrants is to get children to report parents for speech or thoughts contrary to the dictates of those in power; now, in the \u201ctransgender\u201d world, it\u2019s the hip thing to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, if you are one of those who supports feminism, who thinks it was about empowering women, ending the hegemony of the patriarchy, equal opportunities, dispelling the notion that women should not be beholden to the superficialites of sexiness, glamour, and fashion to find their self-worth and the like, you have been deluding yourself. Feminism was and always will be about elites empowering themselves even further, and if it\u2019s at the expense of women, that\u2019s just fine.
